Don't Skip the PM

... Never assume a project is self-managing, unless you don't care about deadlines and budget constraints.

Remote vs Network Rates

To certain clients we extend Network and Remote rates. It's important we make a few points about how this works so there are no misunderstandings.

If we are a working directly with you on a project that has mutual value or one where future ownership and revenue will be shared, we generally will pay for technical services needed to accomplish our portion of the shared goal.

However, if during any mutual project, you have something that would benefit your organization, this is when we offer you direct connection with our technical group. We do this because our future success with you is based on your overall success. If this support helps you overall, then it helps us as well.

Remote Means Not Here

The most important aspect of Remote rates is understanding that all communication is handled via our work processing system. This means there is no telephone consultation available before, during or after the work. Again, this applies only to the skill sets listed. e.g., If the assignment is to move data from one place to another, a data technician can handle that.

However, if this data transfer effort requires extensive instructions, you will need to either create those or use the skills of NP Technical Writer to help create them.

Critical tip: Any work that you plan to use remote services MUST have a high level document that defines your objectives. This document should be mostly graphical in nature. (Long pages like the one you're reading is not your goal.) See example to the left for more.

Network Implies The Work is Performed Locally

In all cases, Network rates include the ability to speak with someone on the phone when problems or questions arise. In most cases, it's not feasible, practical or advisable to manage a remote project without a knowledgeable project manager. If you are skilled in this area, then you understand the importance of not overlooking this role. Therefore, you will notice there is no Remote rate for a Project Manager. (While they exist, there would be little value in hiring a PM to whom you would not be able to speak.)

Critical tip: If you have never managed the development of a software project, make sure you include some PM hours to help else you WILL end up paying lots more in Remote rates.

How to get started ... The above applies only to specific clients. If you are not yet one of those clients and have an idea for a joint venture project, drop us a note with what you have in mind.
